Question:

Can you suggest a game I could do for PE that does not require equipment?

I am teaching a 4th grade class for summer school. We have some basketballs, soccer balls, etc., but basically no other equipment to use for PE. There are basketball courts and a large field, but no lines or goals on the field. I am doing a theme of fantasy for the class, so it would be nice to find games that would fit in with that theme, but anything fun and easy will do.

Today we did "wizards and rocks" (like freeze tag), which worked okay, although we had 2 minor injuries playing on the blacktop.

I'd really like to be able to play "capture the flag," but I don't know how to mark the field for the mid-line, goals and jail.

Any other ideas???

  1. Relay races can be really fun, especially if you have the kids doing weird things, like crab walking, bear walking, army crawling, running backwards, etc. You can call it wizard training or any thematic name you can come up with.

There are TONS of variations on tag, and a place I reccommend you look is:

    www.pecentral.com

you can search for games with the keyword "tag," or "wizards"

This site was especially helpful when I was teaching a fourth grade class at a low-income school that didn't have much equipment.

Good luck! Have a great time!

  2. Soccer balls might work for dodgeball, while basketballs work for bump.  Of course, you could just play normal sports for a while.

  3. GAME 1 (items needed: at least hulahoop)

    TANGLED

have the kids stand in a circle and hold hands. place the hoop between 2 kids so the hoop rests on their hands while holding. the kids must climb through the hoop with their entire body without letting go. the hoop needs to make it around the circle. you can make it more fun by starting 1 hoop at one side of the circle and another hoop at the other side. teaches the kids cooperation.

GAME 2 (tems needed 4 nerf balls)

    MANIC HOT POTATOE

divide the kids into 2 groups. each group sits in a circle. start 2 balls in each group, passing around like hot potatoe. except when the child drops the ball they aren't out, the go to the other group. the game continues until the kids get tired of it. you can add as many balls as you like also.

    GAME 3 (no supplies needed)

    AMEBA

gather kids in a group. tell them that they have to listen closely to your hand claps. they have to self divide into however many claps they hear if they hear 4 claps, they need to get together in groups of 4. anyone odd man out comes and stands by you. then clap again and that child can re-enter. i always used this game to divide up into teams. eventually you can do 2 claps and they will self divide into 2 teams and no one has to pick sides.

GAME 4 (supplies: pitchers of water)

    SPLISH, SPLISH, SPLASH

kids sit in a circle and play duck, duck, goose. but instead of thumping someone on the head they do a splish of water on each and a splash on the chosen one.

  7. Sure, I'll recommend a game we loved playing in the fourth grade.  You may have heard of it by another name, but we called it "Catch One, Catch All."  First, you establish the area of play... usually the bigger, the better.  The one person is "It."  He tries to tag other players after counting to ten.  Once he tags a player, that player is also now "It".  So now you have two people chasing down other players... it's fun because you can "trap" people by the more people you tag.  And the last player who isn't tagged has a fun time trying to elude an entire class!  Usually the last player to be tagged is now "It" for the second game.
