Can you surf in San Diego in January?

I'll be in San Diego for 4 days in early January 2007 and hope to take some lessons.

I heard there are lots of sharks, and the water is contaminated due to all the run-off from storms...You probably should wait until summer.

My wife grew up in La Jolla and she says that you can surf

in January, but it will be cold! It would help to wear a wet suit.

She suggests Wind 'n Sea if you are experienced.

Absolutely. I lived in San Diego for 5 years and surfed in the winter all the time. The water will be cold, but not too bad with a wetsuit. The waves are usually bigger in the winter, so be careful. I don't know if anybody gives lessons in the winter though.
