Howdy,

I'm a rookie surfer and would like to do some surfing in November. I expect it to be around 60 degrees out of the water. I'm not sure what the water temp is; I'll be in Morocco. Is this doable? I assume I'll need a wet suit. Any suggestions on how to make such a trip easy on core body temp? Thanks a brazilian!

  1. try 50 degree water with a 35 wind chill at 20 knots

  2. Ya you can, i surf in 40/30 degree water almost every day and i don't need one in 60, but if you're not used to it, you totally need a wetsuit, the type with the hood, but to help keep yourself extra warm, wear a rashguard under that and also wear those little boots made from the wetsuit material. I guarantee you won't be cold.

  3. Hey Brazilian! You can surf if the water is 60 degrees!!!!!!!! People are surfing of glaciers in Alaska!!!!! Even in the winter in So. Cal the water is 55 degrees. My suggestions to get a full suit with a thickness of 4/3 mm. you might also what to buy booties. O'Neil wetsuits are the best wetsuits and last the longest. For the booties i would suggested spit toe. Have fun in Surfing.

  4. yes i've surfed in 50 degree air temp which is around 40 someodd degrees in the water. wear a good wetsuit. also if u need to take a wiz, do it in your wetsuit in the water, it makes u warm

  5. Water temp is more important than the surface temp, and Winter is the most surfed season in Morocco, temps should be fine in a heavy suit.  Best surf there is called "Killer Point" and is rated a 9 but it takes a long 15-minute paddle for the set-up so you could be out for extended times.Other things to remember: They require you to declare your board there so you have to leave with one (even if it breaks!). Your Spanish might get you around in the south, but you might want to brush up on your French if you plan on heading north.

I linked a great website below for surfing travellers below that has ALOT more information on the surfing there, money, travel, the best surf spots, etc.

**ps the Hash salesmen are traps to arrest you as a source of income for the local police, be careful.

  6. 60 deg isn't bad at all.  You should get a 3 mil wetsuit and 3 mil boots.  We surf around here in the winter when the water temp gets into the high-30s range. I think you should be more concerned about finding waves at a safe break.  I haven't surfed Morocco but I have surfed other places in that region.  A lot of political unrest there now so it's best to travel with a local.

  7. of course not its way too cold

the optimum temperature is 109 degrees

    stay in bed

    watch tv

    read a book

    more waves for me

  8. hey

i surf in ireland n temps in winter are like 6 degrees celcius! there are a few ways you can stay warm when surfing in freezing water though

    1. wear a thick wetsiut - the thicker the better- thick booties, thermal rash vest, a hood if you want to keep your ears warm, gloves, and as many extra layers as you can!

    2. often the water temp is warmer than the air, especially if there is strong wind. stay dry for as long as possible though, avoid duck diving unless you have to. when you do get wet, stay in the water

    3. dont stay in too long, catch a good few waves until you're satisfied, then get out

    4. keep moving!!!

    5. when you get out, get changed into dry clothes as quickly as you can, in a warm place. dont fuss over ur board before you get changed you can do that after!

    hope this helps

  9. I watched a show on discovery when they surfed at a much lower temperature (I assume it's 60 F). That one was pretty dedicated though, he even made his own boards.

  10. Sure you can.  Being from the East Coast I wouldn't even call that cold, more like nice spring or fall weather.  Surfing when it is snowing out is cold.  Assuming water temps above the mid 50's and air temp around 60 I would say that a 3/2 wetsuit would be fine.  If water temp is a little warmer I would even go without booties, unless you are dealing with rock or reef bottom.

Wow, rookie huh and getting to go to Morroco.  Some people have all the luck.

  11. I lived in San Francisco for years and would surf in 50 degree water.  Get a 4.3 wetsuit, booties and gloves and/or a hood if you are really cold.  I always surfed in my 4.3 and booties.  I chill easily so I got cold, for sure, but I had tons of fun so it was worth it.  You'll be fine.  Have fun out there:)

  12. I surf without a wetsuit at 60 degrees. you will be fine as long as you keep moving.

  13. I've seen surfers out when it was 60 degrees out.  They had wet suits on.  Can't help you other than that.

  14. You can,  but I WON'T !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!   Water temp less than 85F and I'm not even goin' in !!!  I like to be comfortable -- not ache all over !!!

But you do whatever Floats Your Boat !  As for me Hawaii & Florida is my stompimg grounds !!!

P.S. -- Even with a wetsuit, you don't want to stay in over about 30minutes w/o coming out to warm up!!!  Water draws the warmth out of your body at about 3 times faster rate than air, so if you stay in to long you could potentially drownd and there are a lot of other physical problems that can result from HYPOTHERMIA !!!  Talk to your doctor & get his advise b4 doing this, your family doctor will probably give you a quick fone call if you tell his reseptionist you have a short, but important question you need to ask him. Doctors do most of their fone calls right after they close for the day -- 5pm to 6 or 7pm usually, but some do it after lunch b4 resuming appointments.

But whatever you do, get good medical advise on what precautions to take, what signs to watch for (hypothermia), & what to do in an emergency!  And NEVER GO SURFING or DIVING ALONE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!    BARBIE

  15. If you are willing to deal with the water temperature, you can surf anytime you would like.  I've surfed off the coast of North Carolina in December, when the air temperature was probably around 35 to 40.  Yes, get a wet suit, and make sure you have the ability to heat yourself up once you get out of the water.  Also, there is a grease type covering that you can coat your body in that help preserve core temperature.  Swimmers who have decided to join the polar bear club have been known to use it.  I'm sorry that I can't give you a brand name to go find.
