Can you swim in the Fox River in Algonquin, Il.?

I am fairly new to the area, does anyone know if it's safe to swim in the Fox River, the Algonquin area? I have seen a couple of people in the water.

I grew up on the Fox in McHenry. Some people say it is safe, but I sure wouldn't swim in it. Your choice, but it is pretty filthy.

I would reccomend swimming in designated areas only. strong swimmers have been known to drown in rivers because the current got them. Learn more about  any place you are going to swim and never swim alone. Make sure other people know where you are (in case something happens they'll know where to drag the river).Personally I prefer swimming in clean pool water. God only knows how much c**p is in our rivers.
