  1. first of all, all that will happen if u touch the wires is the doorbell will ring. I just cant figure out if someone was gonna steal your doorbell button, why in the h**l would they take the time to install a different one.

  2. Yes just keep the wires separated, done it many times. It is low voltage, from a step down transformer.

Like your response, you are smart and probably good looking too, good combination:)

  3. All you need to do is locate the transformer, usually up near the ceiling in a clothes or utility closet and unplug it. That cuts the power to the doorbell.

It's been my experience that people will steal anything that's not red hot or welded down.

  4. Doorbell circuits are 24 volts. Very low. If it does shock you, it wont hurt, and certainly wont kill you.

  5. Absolutely not, stupid, stupid question... what are you trying to do - kill yourself???

  6. You don't need to turn off the electric because it's a low voltage going through a transformer.

  7. just don't let the wires touch each other, or connect them with your s***w driver while you are disconnecting,, it won't hurt you, but you'll get a bit of a scare when the bell rings....

  8. Anytime you are working with something that has an electrical charge there is a risk of being shocked. While the power to a doorbell is relatively low voltage, it can still hurt you! Never work on a line that has juice running through it, end of story. Just like fire, you have to treat electricity with respect and a healthy bit of fear.

  9. Yes. The doorbell is low-voltage (24V AC) so it's safe to handle while it's on.

As for the color change... as you know the the doorbell has a small lamp in it that stays lit. This makes heat which in turn will discolor the button over time. Also, the thing's outside - sun discolors plastic, too.
