Can you take a taxi from Progreso to Merida?

We are cruising and would like to just look around Merida on our own schedule...

Is it safe to take a taxi from Progreso to Merida?

How much is it?

How long does it take?

progrerso its in Mexico city its very far and super expensive and merida is and other city it could be like 10 thousand pesos at least

I'm sure you are talking about the Gulf port of Progreso, no where near Mexico City as the first post says. It would be about a 25-30 minute drive from Progreso to Merida. It's about 40 km to downtown Merida. It's a very modern highway, I would consider it safe.

I've never taken a taxi so I'm not sure of the price but I would guess about $35 USD one way. It may be more or less as I'm sure there will be some negotiating but this really is a complete guess since we always have a car there.

There are lots of Buses to Merida from Progreso, that may be an option for you too. That would certainly be cheap. You can catch buses from the station on Calle 29 & Calle 82, I may be off by a block or two in either direction so you can ask. It would be less than a five minute walk from the Malecon & in the same general direction as the artisans market that is set up when cruise ships are in port.

If you need help, the people in Progreso are generally very helpful, you can also ask the tourist police. If I remember correctly, the tourist police wear white shirts. You will see them around if there is a cruise ship in port. Most of them will speak English to some degree if your Spanish is lacking. You'll actually see a lot of police around if a ship is in port - it's a total over kill as nothing ever happens there but I guess they want to make sure it stays that way as the Yucatan state is working very hard to promote the tourist trade.
