Dumb question, huh? But I'm going to Egypt and I could fill a suitcase with flour. However, I'm not sure that customs would allow it and I cannot find the answer on Google.

And if I can, what kind of flour should it be. We have a few different kinds here in the states but I use on white bleached.

Yes. I know. When millions of people are begging for flour how could 50 pounds help. Do you think it's a stupid idea?

  1. As someone else has mentioned I think you would have big prolems getting a suitcase of flour out of the U.S.

The bread "problem" in Egypt is not so simple as just of lack of flour.

Most urban dwellers live in multi-story blocks of flats and you cannot bake the type of bread Egyptians prefer without using an open faced oven,so they buy bread which traditionally is an essential part of a meal.

I dont think it is a stupid or dumb idea,it shows that you have seen a problem and unlike our Egyptian government are looking for a practical solution.

That is in it self very commendable selfless and proactive

...but unfortunatley it is not feasible.

For even if the flour did get here, how would you distribute it to those who need it most.

It may well end up on the 'blackmarket" or being used in the kitchens of government officials.

  2. Phone the airport and no i dont think its a stupid idea i think your an angel

  3. it's a kind thought .

but we have flour in supermarkets .

the bread problem is not a problem of flour .

the bread is subsidized by the government .

a loaf is less than a cent in price .

people who have chicken or stock take the bread bec it is cheap.

also, we like this bread bec it is mixed with a little bran, which makes it healthier than white bread , and more filling, too.

have a safe and comfortable flight without flour !

  4. i doubt you can. but i'm not sure.

  5. You're a very kind person, but i've to agree with moonrise, if you want to go for this plan you can get flour from Egyptian supermarkets & give it away to the poor, instead of getting it by air

  6. Your very kind to consider this - why not give the same amount of money to charity then the people can use it - who ever you give it to- its the cost of goods that have gone up including some products by the price of 200 %.

White bleached is not that much use for the different products- the local bread is more widly consumed that the lebanese bread which uses white floor. The local bread uses brown. i wish there was more people like you in the world.

    have a good flight

  7. A suitcase filled with flour would weigh a lot.  Airlines have weight limits for baggage these days.  You would have to pay extra for such a heavy bag.

  8. Well, it's not recommended that u put flour in your suitcase, u'll face trouble in the airport, they'll confuse it with drugs!! anyway, Egypt has flour, u can buy it from there once u arrive!

  9. i don't now

  10. From my six-months experience in Egypt, your problem will be in leaving the US...if the TSA found it and thought it was something else. On the Egypt side, all you need is 20 Egyptian pounds...that'll get you around any line...through customs...etc.

People from Europe take things in all the time. If you're caught in Egypt, you either lose whatever it is or you pay a bribe.

And  if "a suitcase full of flour" wasn't an exaggeration...you won't even get the suitcase to the car, much less be able to pay for its transit weight.

  11. how about.......buy flour when you're in egypt??

  12. I don't see the problem as long as it is all factory sealed, and it may be a good idea to have the receipt of purchase.
