  1. You can do either, but, depending upon which airline you're flying on, you may have to pay not only for the second bag, but possibly even the first one.  Check the website for the airline of your choice, and look in their "baggage" section for details.


  2. If you do not want to pay extra, the new rules for most airlines are one bag that weighs 50 lbs or less and one carry-on, plus a purse or a laptop. I actually weigh my bag at home to make sure it is not even near 50 lbs. Do check with your airline about this as not all of them are charging yet for more then 1 bag.

  3. With some airlines you can take two 50 pound bags in addition to your carry on for no extra charge.  Some airlines let you take one 50 pound bag and the carry on, but you can pay for extra bags.  Most airlines will let you take as many as you want if you want to pay for them.  I have travelled with as many as 12 bags by paying for them.  Go to your airline's website and you should find the correct information there.
