I'm 17 now and I took ballet several years ago, right when I was about to hit puberty and I was very chubby and awkward. Now I've grown a lot (I'm about 5' 8") and I've lost a lot of weight. Now I would like to try ballet again, but not for competitions or to do professionally. I would just like to do it for fun and for the exercise too.

I would like to take private lessons, because I know if I begin ballet now I would probably be in a class with much younger girls. Do you think I could do that, or do you know if some dance studios offer lessons for older beginners?

  1. you can take private lessons i think at any age. have fun if you do it!

  2. Definitely start! You are never too old! And its also a good thing to hear you've got your story exactly straight. Taking ballet for fun is great, and there is nothing to stop you from becoming a fantastic dancer!

Private lessons are beneficial, but i would also go to classes with other students as well. The two have different dynamics, and both are beneficial for the dancer.

You may like to consider taking other dance styles as well. Jazz, lyrical and tap are all popular forms of dance styles. Since you want to do ballet for fun, taking these other classes would be a good thing for you.

  3. You are never too old to take ballet.

  4. Of course you can!!!!

    You are never too old!

As long as you put in a lot of hard work and do strengthening and flexibility exercises. These exercises can help get you stronger for ballet:

Releves (rising up and down going through your feet)

    Sit ups

    Push ups

and you can also ask your private teacher what exercises they would recommend for you to get better.

Private tuition in ballet is better then going in a class because you get undivided attention. I highly recommend it to you.

    GOOD LUCK

  5. many dance studios offer classes for beginners who are adults or teens. That would be what you would be in. They also offer private lessons if you prefer those.

I can almost guarantee you that they won't put you in with little girls.
