  1. you can but it takes longer then it would to teach a dog

  2. Sure can! Clicker training seems to be a good way to start.

My cat knows sit, come, lay down, and stop that!

=D I was teaching my dog sit with some treats, cat saw the dog getting food by sitting so he came over and started doing it for dog biscuits! it was the cutest thing ever.

  3. Yes.. you see cats in movies, don't you? Those cats are trained to do a variety of things, including sitting down and staying still, moving toward a certain place, touching something

The best method is "clicker" training, where you use a clicker to say "good kitty" as the cat is doing what you just asked it to. The click as the cat does the trick helps the cat associate the trick with the reward.  I was working with my cats on "sit" and they were doing great.

Basically all you need is a pen that makes a "click" sound.. you know what I mean.

put a treat in  your hand. Let the cat smell that it's there, but don't let him have it.. Keep the treat in your fist where the cat can't get it

have the pen in the other hand.

tell the cat "sit" as you hold your fist right in front of it's nose. Many cats will instinctively sit down when you hold a treat in your fist right in front of their nose.

So, you say "sit" and as the cat sits, click the pen so it makes a double "click-click" noise, and then give the treat immediately.

Do this enough and they begin to associate the command with the click and the treat...

They don't learn as "fast" as a dog, because they lack the desire to please you... but it can be done.

P.S.. THe cat may take a few seconds to decide to sit when confronted with a treat in your fist.. but it helps if, when you can tell your cat is getting ready to sit down, you say sit right before he does. Then click as he sits and then give the treat.

  4. I was going to say the same thing as the first person who answered.  For a good look at how to use clicker training, check out Karen Pryor's Website, yes its a bit commercial, but there are some good thoughts on how to get started.  http://www.clickertraining.com/  There is also a very good Yahoo Group devoted to Cat Clicker Training.  http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/Cat-C...
