I am an American who is starting to take an interest in Australian Rules football. I was wondering if you could teach me some of the basics about the league. I pretty much know the rules of the sport but I know very little about the league. Anyway, what are some things I should know.

For example:

Best players

Rivalries

All-time best teams

and Collingwood has won only 14 premierships but you were close.

  3. I think it best to learn the game like most of us did...Whatch as many games as you can. Thats how i learnt about your american footy....GO RAIDERS

  4. Thanx for your interest in our great game!

Over the years we have seen some great rivalries between Essendon and Carlton as well as Essendon and Hawthorn in the 80s. Most interstate teams based in the same city have built rivalries such as Port Adelaide and Adelaide and West Coast and Fremantle. There is some degree of rivalry been built between Sydney and Brisbane. The AFL have a rivalry round where rival teams play off against one another. I think it's early in the season.

Best players according to the last 10 - 15 years would be people such as Hird, Vos, Carey, Lockett, Dunstall, Richuito, Judd, Cousins, Lynch, Madden, Watson, Archer, Buckley, Daicos, Silvagni, Jacovich, Koutifides, Lloyd... I know there are many that I missed but it's hard to think on the spot!

Some of the greatest players the game has seen are Coleman, Reynolds, Jezalenco, Hudson, Hart, Barker, Farmer and Dyer just off the top of my head.... I am only 34...

Essendon and Carlton have won the most premierships with 16 a piece followed by Collingwodd with 15 (I think). St Kinda and Western Bulldogs have only won one each and Fremantle are yet to win any.

I hope this has been somewhat helpful to you.
