  1. In an ultrasound they will look for "soft markers" such as a missing nasal bone, and they can do a nuchal translucency if you are not too far along. I think 19 weeks is deadline for the nucal translucency, which measures the folds in the back of ur babe's neck. If they find a soft marker in ultrasound, they will ask u to do a quad screen which will tell u your chances of having a baby with down's. The screening measures the amount of 4 hormones produced by the placenta, fetus, and ovaries, and gives u an estimate on your chances. 1 in 2000 I think is the norm. If the quad comes back with an abnormal reading, they will suggest a more invasive test called an amniocentises, in which they will extract some of baby's amniotic fluid to test. This test is 99% accurate.  Hope this helps a little!

  2. For me they are doing a blood test.

  3. Not really from the ultrasound.

They can tell if it is likely to have DS by measuring the nuchal fold (skin at the back of the neck) during the ultrasound and/or by doing an amniocentesis. But these really only give you an idea of how likely it is.

I'm fairly certain it takes a blood test for a proper diagnosis.

  4. they have testing available, which your doctor will tell you about. I just did the basic screen at 16 weeks. They can also do more invasive testing if you are really concerned.

There are several things they look for in an ultrasound that are "markers", but they don't use an ultrasound to medically find out.

Your doctor should/should've gone over all the testing with you at your first appointment...at least mine did.

  5. they will do blood test then if it comes back abnormal they will suggest amneo testing. an ultrasound could show a possibility but i would not bank on it.

  6. They can not tell in an ultrasound but they can tell by taking your blood and testing it for certain characteristics of downs and it tells you at what percentage your baby will be born with downs but it can not tell you for sure if the baby is going to have downs unless it is 100%. There have been many women who they said they would have it and to maybe get an abortion and they didn't and the baby didn't have downs. And then there are women who they said no chance and they did have downs. I know quite of few cases of this with a lot of my friends.

  7. Yes they can.

  8. Yes they can

  9. yes they can by measuring the arms and legs and skull and all that good stuff :)

  10. No! you have to have an amniocentesis. It is the only sure way to know if you baby has Downs before birth. it is also the definitive way to find out the baby's s*x. This test checks the chromosome 21 to see if there are any irregularities and it will tell you if the baby has XX chromosomes(girl) or XY chromosomes(boy).
