somewhere such as h&r block..

made under 20k, no dependents, no property, no government aid.

the only thing to take into consideration besides my earnings was a sale of stock options.

i know you can't tell me exactly but i just want to know an estimate of how much tax preparation would cost

  1. $100-200, depending on how many different lots ( ie transactions, )were sold and whether you now your basis in the options. Most likely, you did a "cashless exercise" of options. If that be true your basis will be shown on your 2008 form W-2 as code V in box 12, and you will get form 1099B from the broker.

If that's the case all the info needed is handy and the fee should be closer to $100 than $200.

Also, I suggest that you deal with a genuine tax professional. Chain firms tend to hire a lot of incompetents and it's a c**p shoot whether you get a pro or a rookie. Plus, pros ar no more expensive.

  2. Likely over $100.  Without the sale of the stock options would likely have been under $100.
