I am coming with my wife to Melbourne from India. I have been here as a tourist before but have not seen much. I liked the country and have preferred it over USA. Can you tell me good things about this city and the country? I am 49 and going to live rest of my life here.

  1. Melbourne is very multicultural it is a very spread out city and quite flat with lots of suburbs but has a reasonable transit system .

There is a wealth of choices in foods & shopping and sport. There is not only cricket & AFL but also Rugby league & Soccer as football sports also basketball and many others.

The weather can get down into the single numbers in Winter but its not all winter & we occasionally have snow falls in the near hills. The weather in Summer is in the mid 20's to high 30's & occasionally into the low 40's

Traveling around Victoria & Australia is reasonably easy with a Car all tho many people have to adjust to our view of just up the road ( can be an hour drive of 100 km) The Beaches in Victoria are clean the bay is a nice place to boat & Swim & if you like surf its only an hour or so to the coast depending on where you live.

  2. Plenty.

    Restaurants.

    Shopping.

    Sport.

    Culture.

    Nightclubs.

    Bands.

    Parklands.

    Too much too mention.

It gets cool in winter. New York & London are cold.

  3. Good things; trams, very multicultural, fanatical sports city!

  4. It's multicultural and there's a few pancake parlours which I love.   I've lived here for a few years after having lived in Sydney and Queensland beforehand and have to say the place has really grown on me.  It has a unique look with many old buildings and tree lined streets that change colour through the seasons.  You won' t  get this as much up north.  Have a great life in Australia!!!

  5. Melbourne is a great place. I spent my first 20 or so years there and even though I now live in Brisbane (and wouldn't live anywhere else), I really look forward to my 2 or 3 visits to Melbourne each year.

If you're at all interested in sport, it's the sporting hub of Australia. As an Indian, you will probably be a cricket lover and cricket at the MCG which is the largest cricket ground in the world (100,000 all seated) is a great experience. Don't miss the Boxing Day Test - one is arranged every year with one of the other test nations.

Another answerer mentioned Australian Rules football. If you want to really fit in as quickly as possible in Melbourne, you should get into Aussie Rules. Just about everyone down there is mad for it and it's a constant topic of conversation from March until September.

Melbourne has hundreds of marvellous restaurants for every imaginable type of cuisine. Its shopping is the best in Australia and its parks are the largest and most beautiful.

The weather is not so good compared to the rest of Australia and it can get quite cold and wet in winter. The weather is also quite changeable - 4 seasons in one day is not unusual, but on balance, I think the good things about Melbourne outweigh the bad.

I'm sure you'll be happy there. Welcome.

  6. Melbourne is a very multicultural city, there is something for everyone here. Great food at good prices, plenty too see and do. There is alot of nice places to see down on the coastal areas, good for walking and enjoying mother nature in her more "wild" moments. The mountain ranges are a beautiful for walking and just having some peace and quiet. There is alot more to Melbourne and its surrounding country the fun will be in finding what is just right for yourself. Good Luck...

  7. The only good thing about Melbourne is the Aussie Rules football.

Being an Indian you will freeze your googlies off in the south.

Better Sydney or Brisbane where there is decent weather.
