Can you tell me how far from London Heathrow Airport is situated?

Also, what is the best means of transportation into London? And are visit visas required for a one day trip into London? Can I get a visa at Heathrow? Do Americans need visas?

The cheapest method of getting from Heathrow into Central London is to take the Underground, a return ticket should cost about £7, a one day travelcard for Zones 1 - 6 costs about the same but it will allow you to use the tube & bus as much as you want.  

The Heathrow Express is the quickest method of getting into Central London, it goes straight to Paddington, the cheapest one day return fare is approx £29 & you would still need to invest in a travelcard to use on public transport.  

I can’t answer your question about a visa though - the British Embassy near where you live should be able to tell you.  

Are you changing planes to travel on somewhere else?  How many hours between flights will you actually have?  You'll also need to factor in time spent travelling in & out of London and you'll need to check what you actually need to do if you leave the airport & return.

About 7 miles...best bet would be to get the express train you dont need a visa as long as your trip is no longer than 3 months..i think

You cannot get visas at airport . The Embassy is nearby.

The airport is situated to the west of London, probably around 15 or 20 miles from the centre, You can use the Underground railway  [subway as you call it] it does'nt take more than approx 50 mins to be in central London.  There are fast & frequent trains. ...So far as I know, Americans do not need visas.
