    I totally agree with you.  I prefer diagrams over the algebraic notation system too.   I think this website (see link below) may be a user-friendly approach for you.  It uses a theater format with diagrams and someone explaining moves and such.   You will see why so many folks have found this website to be very helpful in defining various aspects of chess.  I hope this is helpful to you as well.  Wishing you the best!

    There are plenty of diagrams there, PLUS algebraic notation. They annotate games of former greats and current champions. But you will need Flash to view it.
