  1. There are currently only 8 main planets in our solar system and 4 dwarf planets.

    The 8 main planets are:

    Mercury

    Venus

    Earth

    Mars

    Jupiter

    Uranus

    Neptune

    The 4 dwarf planets are:

    Ceres

    Pluto

    Makemake

    Eris

You can read more about our solar system in the sources.

  2. Sorry

  3. sedna

  4. Since Pluto was stupidly demoted as not being a planet there is now a bunch of speculation. Gee if it's not a planet then why is Charon called its Moon. Anyway, you can go to this site and learn quite a lot & see pics of astronomy:  http://www.space.com/  Have fun!

  5. The 10th planet isn't named yet.

  6. eris, new dwarf planet is the largest object found in orbit around the sun since the discovery of Neptune and its moon Triton in 1846. It is larger than Pluto, discovered in 1930.

  7. the planet ub313 is the 10th planet and it was discovered in 2007

  8. Eris

This new dwarf planet is the largest object found in orbit around the sun since the discovery of Neptune and its moon Triton in 1846. It is larger than Pluto, discovered in 1930. Like Pluto, the new dwarf planet is a member of the Kuiper belt, a swarm of icy bodies beyond Neptune in orbit around the sun. Until this discovery Pluto was frequently described as "the largest Kuiper belt object" in addition to being a dwarf planet. Pluto is now the second largest Kuiper belt object, while this is the largest currently known.

The dwarf planet is the most distant object ever seen in orbit around the sun, even more distant than Sedna, the planetoid discovered almost 2 years ago. It is almost 10 billion miles from the sun and more than 3 times more distant than the next closest planet, Pluto and takes more than twice as long to orbit the sun as Pluto.

  10. Currently, there are eight planets and four (officially recognized) dwarf planets: Ceres, Pluto, Makemake, and Eris.

Ceres is in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, so it is the closest dwarf planet to Earth.  It was discovered in 1801 and was briefly termed as one of the planets, until it was demoted to being an asteroid around 1850.  It was recently promoted to the status of dwarf planet.  Ceres doesn't really seem to care much what we call it.

Pluto used to be called the ninth planet, but now is also called a dwarf planet.  Eris is the largest of the dwarf planets, and Makemake is the most recently discovered one.

So, in all, there are 12 planets: 8 major planets and 4 dwarf planets.  I think some people started calling Eris the "tenth planet" for a while.  That's what really sparked the heated debate about the planet classification, which eventually got Pluto demoted.

  11. 2003UB313, found on Oct. 21, 2003, using the Samuel Oschin Telescope at the Palomar Observatory near San Diego, Calif.Scientists did not discover that the object in the solar system was a planet until Jan. 8, 2005. Image credit: Samuel Oschin Telescope, Palomar Observatory

The planet is a typical member of the Kuiper belt, but its sheer size in relation to the nine known planets means that it can only be classified as a planet, Brown said. Currently about 97 times further from the sun than the Earth, the planet is the farthest-known object in the solar system, and the third brightest of the Kuiper belt objects.

  12. Only eight planets ya:)

  13. The IAU is proposing the following definition of a planet, which would make our beloved tenth planet, really the 12th planet!

A planet is a celestial body that (a) has sufficient mass for its self-gravity to overcome rigid body forces so that it assumes a hydrostatic equilibrium (nearly round) shape, and (b) is in orbit around a star, and is neither a star nor a satellite of a planet.

Under this definition, Pluto would remain the 9th planet, but its moon, Charon, would be reclassified as the 10th planet. In addition, Ceres, an asteroid would also be reclassified as a planet, making it the 11th planet. Finally, to confuse matters further, all of these would also be called plutons to distinquish them from the eight “classic” planets.

If this definition is accepted, and it may not be, we could end up with 53 planets immediately, and possibly hundreds as more are discovered in the outer reaches of the solar system.

IAU members will vote on this definition on August 24th, 2006. Confusing times for our 2003 UB313 planet. Is it a planet? Is it the tenth planet? Is it the twelfth planet? Is it also a pluton? And what name will it be given? We won’t have to wait long for the answers.

  14. ..10th? do we have? there are only nine but now 8 cause pluto was deducted from it and just considered as an asteroid. aw

  15. You should ask which is the NINETH planet because Pluto has been removed from the list of planets of our Solar System.

  16. There are only eight official planets.

  17. We only have eight planets.

  18. hint : it is like a circle- it moves around the sun - it is tenth planet in solar system

    then guss?

  19. There is no "10th" official planet. There are only 8,

    Mercury

    Venus

    Earth

    Mars

    Jupiter

    Saturn

    Uranus

    Neptune

  20. yup....Pluto isn't a planet anymore.....anything outside of this is up in the air....Pluto was nine....and it's not a planet anymore.....We will never have the intelligence to see out of this galaxy until the world stops fighting and become one on this planet.  Instead of making war heads to kill each other lets go see the universe.....d**n!

  21. There are only eight planets.
