Can you tell me the name of this Ontario road-side specialty?

Years ago, my wife and I encountered a road-side stand somewhere in Ontario. It was selling a concoction consisting of french fries, mozarella cheeze, and meat gravy. It tasted incredibly good....much better than it sounds! The name was something like "poutaine", but I doubt if that is correct. Does anyone know what it is actually called? The proprieter claimed it was a common food in the region, and he was surprised that we Americans had never had it before.

  1. Its called : une poutine

I had it ! Its really good. It is made with curd cheese, fries and brown sauce. You can find it in any little fast food stand in Quebec. Bon appetit !

  2. It's "poutine" if you want to look it up.  I'm dying (maybe literally!) to try it someday.

  3. Poutine is good stuff for sure, however there are some things to look for to get truly great poutine.

Some vendors use shredded motzarella instead of curds.  I recommend looking for a place that advertizes they use St. Albert's curds to start off.  I would also ask for the fries to be well done (crispy) as the cheese and gravy make things a bit mooshy.

Lastly good homemade beef gravy takes it to the next level, so look for roast beef on the menu.  You call also ask for a small sample of the gravy before laying down your cash.  The same losers who use shredded cheese,  may also use canned gravy which is super salty and gross.

You can of course make your own as you know the ingredients now. You do not need a deep fryer just a cooking thermometer.  Search the net for how to make the perfect fry I gotta go.
