  1. According to the standards of the American Diabetes Association, a fasting blood test of 126 mg/dL or higher is sufficient to diagnose diabetes, if confirmed by a second test.  So your son either has diabetes, or at least the doctors should be following up with an additional test to confirm whether or not he has diabetes.

  2. The glucose tolerance test is the gold standard for gestational diabetes, it helps people to have a migraine headache or pass out there at the lab and waste a whole day!!

There are a lot of doctors who do not subscribe to the GTT, instead they want a blood draw so they can see the last 90 to 120 days of glucose damage to the system. This is the HbA1c which is a percentage number. Anything under 6 being sort of good with normal at 5 to 5.5 It is the percentage of glucose molecules clinging to the red blood cells.

Normal readings are anywhere from 65 to 100, pre diabetes is 101 to 125, and diabetes anywhere over 126.

Please note that glucometers are not necessarily accurate to any lab standards. They can be anywhere from 20 percent to 50 percent accurate and be acceptable. This is why doctord do not diagnose from the instant glucose readings of finger pricking.

My glucometers are checked by me when I have a blood draw at the lab to see that they are still very close to what the lab is reading.

Damage to tiny nerve endings and blood vessels starts occuring at glucose readings of 126!

  3. that is a little high.  it depends on the ranges that lab uses.  80-100   or 100-120

I wouldn't panic yet.  Now, if it was 200 or 300 or higher, I would panic.

He will need further testing to determine if he is a diabetic.  It is called a glucose tolerance test.  They will give him something with sugar in it by mouth and take his blood glucose at different times and increments after.

  4. 131 fasting isn't exactly what I would call good. I would say that he more than likely is diabetic if he absolutely didn't eat anything before the test. Normal would be considered below 90 for a fasting glucose level. Your son's level was 40 points above normal. I would imagine that the Dr. would perform some more testing. Please listen to what the Dr. has to say b/c your son's future rides upon how his diabetes is taken care of for the rest of his life.

  5. That is a little high, but not diabetic levels. You might want to exercise and reduce your sugar intakes somewhat--even moderate daily exercise is very helpful in stabilizing your blood sugar levels.

  6. It's usually 70-120 for non-diabetic's but you shouldn't worry all that much. It also depends on when he ate before that. You should wait two hours after he eats to check. Its normal if he had eaten sometime before the check, to be anywhere up to 160 or so

  7. No Thats Not That Bad At All.

Normally Your Bloodsugar Shoud Be Between 80-150 When You Get Up In The Morning.

But It All Depends On How Much He Weighs, Because Your Target Bloodsugar Depends On Your BMI ( Body Mass Index )

Hope I Helped. But Seriously You Dont Have To Worry About Anything Just Keep Track Of His Weight Because Pre-Diabetics Usually Lose A Ton Of Weight Before Thier Diagnosed.
