  1. it look like a 3 toe turlte

  2. It MIGHT be an old painted turtle. It IS semiaquatic. It is definitely not a box, three-toed box, wood, or map turtle. Can you post a better lighted picture or three (top, side, and bottom)?

You might also want to get your hands on a field guide. The Peterson series has two guides to reptiles and amphibians, one for the western U.S. and one for the rest of the country. Once you know what species you have, you can care for it better.

  3. The shell isn't domed high enough to be a box turtle or a 3 toed box turtle as I believe the other person was trying to say. You don't mention what state you live in, so that doesn't help much, but as mentioned, sea turtles have flippers, freshwater turtles have webbed back toes, and just because there's no water around that you know of, there could be a little swampy area off in any surrounding woods. It still might not be a water turtle though. Again, not knowing where you live... it ~could~ be a North American Wood Turtle, the profile's about right, but the pic is dark so I can't see coloration very well and I can't see head shape or anything.

This one's a male, females aren't as brightly colored: http://www.turtleworldsam.com/NA%20wood%...

If this IS what kind of turtle it is, you need to put it back where you found it, last I knew they were protected... perhaps even endangered at this point, and that means there are legal penalties for even touching one, much less taking it home and turning it into a pet.

  4. please return the turtle in the same area that you found it.  the turtle was on a mission before you interrupted his journey.  the turtle doesn't need you or your help to survive.

  5. I can tell you right now that it isn't a box turtle. I have had box turtles for over 13 years, and that turtle is most likely a painted turtle, which is a water turtle.Water turtles do not have "flippers"( except for sea turtles),but they do have webbed back feet.Does the turtle have a red belly and red on it's legs? If so,then it is a painted turtle, and you should take it back to where you found it,or do a search on the care and feeding of painted turtles. It looks to be pretty old, though,so it will not do well in captivity.

Edit: Can you show us a picture of her belly? Also, her back feet ARE webbed,I can see in the photo. It is not a map, box,or wood turtle. Look around the area where you found her and see if there is a water source( lake ,pond,or river.) If there is,then she was just out looking for a place to lay her eggs, and you should put her back as close to where you found her as possible,as turtles have a very good homing instinct and she will head that way no matter where you let her go.

HERE: You can look at many different turtles and decide which one it is! Map turtles have ridges on their backs most of the time, and elaborate markings on the face. Wood turtles  have brown and orange on them, and I know box turtles,as I have them.

  6. It is obviously some type of Map turtle- the photo is not clear enough to conclusively identify the exact species.

It appears to be an adult female. They are aquatic, but sometimes wander long distances from the water when they are looking for nesting sites, which this one was most likely doing. Their preferred habitat is large rivers and backwaters.

It would be best if you release her near where you found her, so that she can lay her eggs.

    * I have looked at the new photos. It is a common map turtle,  Graptemys geographica (which do not resemble Wood turtles in the least).

Compare your turtle to these photos:

The fact that it laid eggs without digging a hole proves that you are stressing it. You really should release it!!

  7. this is definitely a water turtle, it is not a box turtle or a tortoise

  8. looks like a painted turtle i own 2 box turtles and that  looks nothing like my box turtles.

    hope i helped

  9. boxed

  10. I agree with Gimmenam.  It definetly is a Wood turtle.  They are kind of terrestrial as opposed to the aquatic turtles found (i.e. Painted tutles, Map Turtles and othe terrapins).  They do however are known to wander in swampy, bog like territory areas.

Okay, I might of have been wrong.  I've just seen that they have posted new pictures and it doesn' look like a wood turtle from the new pictures. It is an aquatic turtle though, I am sure of that.  All turtles when put in the water will try to swim away as fast as they can to get away, that is why you thought it was not liking the water.  It looks to be some kind of Cooter species, or possibly a species of slider....not a red eared.

  11. Luna E is correct!
