Can you tell me what rank my grandfather was in the Navy?

Hi -

My grandfather recently passed. For reasons I won't get into, no one is able to tell me what his rank was in the Navy. We're going to be adding his name to a memorial plaque for veterans and we have to include his rank (or at least make an educated guess, which is where you come in).

He was in WWII. He served only his one tour and then was out. He drove a boat at the landing of Iwo Jima. I've been told he was likely a "boatswain's mate". The plaque requires that we have his name and then his title in the military underneath. Can someone please help me with a likely title that he would have had with the details I've given? I am not familiar with military ranking so I really appreciate your help. Guessing at this is not nearly as good as knowing for sure, but it's more important his name be honored on that plaque than anything else and so we're comfortable with getting as close as we can to accurate. Thanks in advance!

  1. How to Request Military Service Records or Prove Military Service.

PS: The Navy doesn't use "rank" they have "rating".

  2. Try visiting evetrecs.com they should be able to help and give you an exact answer. You'll need his personal info such as full name, social, and DOB.

  3. NOT with the information provided !!

IF he was a "boat driver" his IS most likely from the Boatswain's Mate (BM) Rating... His Rate (pay-grade) is impossible to guess.

YOU as a Grand-daughter should qualify as NOK (Next of Kin) for purposes of this information.  The sites given to you should get you the information if you have his name, DOB, and SSN.

Thanks to Your Grandfather... Fair Winds and Following Seas Shipmate.
