Can you tell the difference between most name brand and generic food products?

Just wondering...I tried to pass off Malt O Meal cereal in place of kids usual and the knew the difference!

  1. The difference is the formula (recipe) used to make the product.

    For example, canned tomatoes may be made by one factory (since they are the only game in town), but they will make different runs depending upon which labels they're sticking on the can.  


  2. usally there is a slight difference in the ingredients list whether it a food additive ,colourand or flavourings ect  

  3. Sometimes I can; sometimes I can't.  In fact, there are certain things that the storebrand is BETTER than the name brand!

  4. i can on certain things... not everything, though. my husband, on the other hand is a pro at spotting the fakes!

I would say, mostly yes, if it's a product that I've used for many years but I do try to open myself up to the new lines of off brand names.  We're all trying to pinch our pennies where we can, but there are some items that just don't cut it.  I've found that in a complex dish, the generic brands aren't so detectable, but if they are used in a simple dish, then I can taste the difference right away.  Hope this helps you today!
