  1. It depends on where you go. I assume that your are aware of the size of Australia? In January and Feb the temperature off Tasmania is probably over 15 Centigrade and thats about the coldest spot.

  2. In Far North Queensland the water is like a warm bath during January and February. Box jellyfish do not populate the snorkelling areas of the Great Barrier Reef as they are coastal, however other jellyfish do as in any tropical waters. For this reason some prefer to wear a stinger suit as they are called. These also protect from sunburn. The boat companies provide these for passengers though not all fit well and can look quite sad!

  3. During Jan and Feb, it will be warm enough in most parts of Australia to swim and/or snorkel without a wetsuit. In Queensland and the northern half of Western Australia, you would be able to snorkel all year round at a pinch, but would be more comfortable in neophrene in June, July and August in southern Queensland and the equivalent part of WA.

ATM in early June, the sea surface temperature off southern Queensland is about 22C, off Cairns 23.6C, off Sydney about 20.6C, Perth 21.6, Melbourne 13.6, Hobart 13.6C, Adelaide 16.4C.

The following is a link to a sea temperature map for diving regions. It should tell you everything you need to know about sea temperatures around the country:

  4. At resorts designed for snorkling, your body would cope nude or with bikini/shorts (meaning it is pleasantly warm - don't do the naked bit in public).

You could snorkle in the sea anywhere in Australia, depending on local weather conditions, any day of the year.  You ought consider a wetsuit wherever you go for protection from the cold, or the sun, or the coral if you accidently brush against it.  The marine stingers and box jelly fish inhabit much of the northern waters in summer (when you are proposing to come) which results in beaches being closed.  Great Barrier Reef islands may not be closed to swimming and many of them have snorkling facilities.

Further south, we swim in the ocean and seaside at that time of the year, in brief bathers, so long as the weather is appropriate.  The water is mild, as far south as Port Phillip Bay (Melbourne) in summer; and it can get extremely hot; up to 44 degrees Celcius
