Shepherd satellites are moons that orbit within, or just beyond, a planet's ring system. They have the effect of sculpting the rings: giving them sharp edges, and creating gaps between them. Saturn's shepherd moons are the moonlets, Pan, Daphnis, Atlas, Prometheus, Pandora, in addition to three other unconfirmed moons   Also called shepard moons, these small moons were discovered to be orbiting within an outer section of Saturn's rings.  They were discovered when photographs revealed unusual formations in the rings which until the discovery of the shepherd moons were unexplainable. The tug of gravity acting on the rings by the small moonlets, 8 so far discovered,  was one of the most unexpected and significant discoveries by the Casini space probe.
