Can you tie a knot in a young tree and it not die?

When I was a child my grandfather tied a knot in a very small tree and it grew into a large tree with a cool knot in the trunk. My husband does not believe me and says I've been dooped. He thinks grandpa played a trick on all of us. Is tying a knot in a tree possible?

Yes. there is a real art to this and on TV onetime I saw a whole garden of plants and trees done like this.

Yes, a young limber tree can be tied into a knot.

Take care not to break or damage the trunk.

Carefully remove each side shoot or limb.

Select a type of knot that will avoid a tree girdle as the tree grows.  At least one side of the truck must remain free to grow without becoming choked out by other growing trunk parts.

Rather than a knot, a twisted or intertwined trunk arrangement will achieve a higher success rate.

Select two or more separate trunks or closely spaced tree trunks.

Use a braiding design of choice to intertwine the trunks.

As the trees grow, the trunk will become more stable and gain strength superior to a single trunk much the same as a woven fabric is stronger than a single thread.
