Can you train a dog that has been raised in a kennel?

I found a dog she is 5 years old. she is in a horrible condition. she is stuck in a small kennel. she is never messed with or shown any attention. she have never been bathed. Is it possible to train her to be a house dog?

Yes, it is possible to make a dog that has been in a kennel for such a long time become into a house dog however it may take a long time since he/she is not used to being fussed over or shown any attention in the past! Hope this has helped!

Maybe ... maybe not.

If she's been as neglected as you say, she was likely never socialized when she was young.  Some dogs (not all) who miss out on socialization as youngsters will be unable to form attachments to humans.  She may never have been taught how to interact with people, and might prove to be aggressive or have other temperament issues.

She'll probably have some health problems, as well ... I doubt that she's been kept up to date on shots, etc., and she probably has fleas and possible internal parasites ... maybe even heartworm.

What a horrible thing that some people will keep a dog in conditions like that.

It may be possible to turn her into a house pet, but it will take a ton of love and patience.  She's probably never been housetrained, either, so that will be an issue.  It's really difficult to housetrain an older dog.

If you're unsuccessful at retraining her and it becomes clear that it isn't going to work, don't blame yourself.  It just might not be possible.  If that's the case, sadly, the kindest thing to do would be to have her euthanized.

absolutely, i fully believe with consistency and positive reinforcement, any dog can be trained! if you've ever watched the show "it's me or the dog" on animal planet, you'll see any dog really can be trained. in fact yesterday's episode dealt with a former kennel dog that had separation anxiety.

just stick to the training, repetition is key! use positive reinforcement too and be patient!  :-)
