Can you transfer a personalised number plate onto a car without being the registered keeper?

I wanted to transfer my number plate to my mates car as i am planning to buy his car in couple of weeks time.

Do i need to be the registered owner to put the number plate on his car?

  1. due to the personalised number plate being personalised to you you will need to be the registered keeper of the vehicle to be able to use the plates on the vehicle it is a legal requirement as the plates are registered to you thus the vehicle having to be in your name failing to adhere to the regulations set by the dvla in the uk you are liable for a hefty fine and a conviction for road traffic offences which in turn can affect your insurance hope this helps you.

  2. I own a personal plate and can tell you that Dunrob is the only person who has given you the correct answer.

Yes it is more expensive to retain because it involves 2 amounts of clerical work maybe many months apart.

  3. Of course you can't...that would be ridiculous if you could...can you imagine? I'd change a few meself of people I know...you know TO22 3R would be one along with WAIV K3R...that would be fun!

  4. why not wait a couple of weeks , then you will be the registered keeper and will not have this problem - I can not see why you couldn't do it now tho.

  5. Yes only the registered owner can transfer the plate and only thru the DVLA

  6. You can transfer it to his car, but he will have to sign the transfer paperwork (as will you), and the number will become his until you buy the car.

  7. No

When you first got the number it was explained to you that you could only have two other people associated with the number and you had to name them at the time.

You can only have the plate on a vehicle owned by yourself, or one of the other two.

With respect to your other answerers, they are misinformed and incorrect.

  8. yes you can do this through the dvla i find it easier going to my nearest dvla office rather than doing it through the post, but you will still have to  wait for the paperwork to come through before you put your number plates on the vehicle and if  the sale has not gone through  when the plates do go on, your mate will have to inform his insurance company about the change of reg. number. Previous answers mentioned naming 2 people to do with the reg. number, this is the nominees this is filled in when... for example ....If i were  to spend a lot of money for a number plate i could name my son and this would allow him to transfer the plates to a car of his choice without me having to do the paperwork as the owner of the number plate.. but it would not allow him to sell the plates ..only i could do that as the certificate is in my name
