For example if I buy a rock band song on my xbox and then I go to a friends house and I recover my gamertag on their xbox will I be able to re-download the song that I bought and save it on his hard drive?

  1. You can, but there are few catches.

Firstly, some downloaded content is thereafter only accessible when your console is connected to Xbox Live. In other words, you'll lose offline functionality of that content permanently. I don't know it this happens to in-game content but it certainly happens to, for example, certain videos and Xbox Live Arcade games.

Secondly, the content will only be playable under the profile in which it was originally downloaded, so when you go back home and recover your Gamertag back on your own system the content will stop working on the second Xbox.

This of course means that you'll then be faced with the online restrictions, and possibly the user profile restriction if you have more than one user profile on your own Xbox.
