  1. Wha?

  2. If you are a green card holder in the United States , yes you may travel to France, but you must also have a passport.  A green card does not serve the same purpose as a passport, it just shows that you may legally re-enter the United states.  Since you are not a U.S. citizen, you cannot get a U.S. passport.  You must use your passport from your home country.  If you no longer have a passport from your home country, you need to contact the embassy of your home country to the U.S. and apply for one.  As a green card holder, you are responsible to keep a current passport from your home country.  You may also need a visa to enter France. You can use the website below to see if you need a visa for France.  Enter your nationality, enter that you are an alien resident of the U.S.A., then enter France as your destination and click for the info and it will tell you if you need a visa.

  3. Do you still have your original nationality? Last I knew, France didn't accept re-entry permits and this was a problem for refugees who had relatives in Europe. Ages ago, a friend who fled Cambodia during the war had to see her relatives in Belgium because France wouldn't let her in. Let's hope that's changed!

Having permanate residency for any country doesn't change anything. No French authority will be interested in the green card.

Your citizenship is always your citizenship so get your passport and then see if you need a visa. The good news is that there is now a "Schengen" visa. One visa is good for 15 countries including France so take advantage and maybe you might use it again for another trip or you can connect through one of those countries without any further paperwork.

When I got married, my witness got a Schengen visa to attend. She had had her green card for 20 years and said the visa was no big deal. She's Chinese but has since taken out American citizenship.
