Can you travel from Merida, Mexico to Cuba by boat?

I'm in Merida and would like to travel to Cuba. Is it possible to go by boat (no, I don't have my own yacht...yet).

If you are a US citizen it is a very bad idea.  If you make a visit and have your passport marked, it will be found when you come back to the US.  It's against federal law for any US citizen to travel to Cuba, no matter what route you take.

Yes, go 30 minutes north to progresso. They have boats there to take you. Cuba is only three hours by boat.

It's possible, but then risky, If your caught by the u.s. coast guard, you'll be deported back immediately and possibly fined and imprisoned. so unless your Canadian or non-American, it might not be a situation you'd want to get into. Other words, "not a great idea."

There are no regular boat services - so you'd have to charter a boat specially, and would have to arrange that the Cuban authorities are expecting you before you leave.

How do you plan on leaving Cuba again ? Cuba insists that all tourists can prove that they will be leaving again (if you arrive by air, you need your return ticket, for instance).

If you are sailing to Cuba, be sure to contact port authorities before you reach jurisdictional waters (12 miles from the base line). Use these communication channels:

-HF (SSB) channel 2760 (national coastal network) and 2790 (tourism network); or

-VHF channel 68 (national coastal network) and 16 (tourism network).

Port authorities will ask you for the following information:

-name of yacht

-flag

-port of registry

-last port of call

-port of arrival

-estimated time of arrival (ETA)

-type of craft

-colour of craft

-number of persons on board.

You must follow the instructions given by the port authorities and remain on board until all legal formalities are concluded.

I think that once you get into Cuban water, the Cuban coast guard will detain you. Since they're a kinda totaltarian government under the Castros, I think you're gonna die there.
