My husband has his green card. However, he is not a citizen of the United States yet. His passport from his native country is expired. Can he leave the US? Can he visit other countries?

Does he need a visa to leave?

  1. Right now for LPR returning to the US they only need their Resident Card is not green anymore  is beige lol. Now you have to find out the country you're going to if they required passport along with the resident card to be honest must of them do required passport. Find out he's country requirement for entry before he make Hi's trip there.

  2. He needs passport and green card to come back to US.

With US green card, only Canada and Mexico doesn't require visa. The other countries, he may be required to have visa to enter their countries. He can check the visa requirement here

  3. Hi, US greencard is used for enter/leaving USA only.  If he wants to travel somewhere outside USA, he needs his origin country passport, otherwise other countries will not let him enter.  I think he can renew his passport in USA, just check with his country consulate here.

Tourist visa is depending which country passport (valid passport) does he hold, cos' different countries have different fee waived visa.  hope it can help.

  4. He should never have let his passport expire!  He needs to renew it immediately.  And to travel outside the US, he must fulfill whatever visa requirements are in effect for citizens of his country of citizenship, not those for US citizens since he is not a US citizen.  And he does have to check out of the US if he wants to get back in.  If he is out of the US too long, his green card is cancelled as an "abandoned application."

  5. yeah I would be careful and just call the airlines to check. or look on the websites

  6. He needs a passport to leave the country. He should be able to renew his passport at his countries consulate.

  7. He has to return to the States within a year I believe it is or he will lose his green card status.

  8. he needs to renew his passport..he needs to call the nearby consulate for his country and find out what he needs to do to renew it...either he can send in the form or he has to go over there in person....There is a belarus consulate in washington dc....i have never heard of anybody renewing their passports in their home countries if they are already in the u.s....maybe its different for belarus?

then, when he is talking to the consulate of his native country (while renewing passport), he needs to ask them if he needs a visa to travel to the country he wants to travel to.

if he does, he needs to contact the consulate of the country he wants/needs to travel to to get a visa stamped and pay a fee.

he always needs to carry his greencard safely AT ALL TIMES WITH HIM.  This is the key to re-entering the U.S.

i believe he can stay out of the U.S. 6 months per year (but i would find out the answer to this question from a legitimate source).

    good luck!
