To ascertain if this is possible for the bowl you are considering, it is first important to find out how hard the material is.  A scratch test in an inconspicuous area of the bowl with a nail will give you some idea. Does the nail easily leave a scratch mark or not?  Is the bowl glazed?  Do you have an idea of how hard (and therefore brittle) the material might be?  Or is the material porous like marble? If hard and brittle, there is a risk of shattering the bowl instead of successfully getting a hole through it.  Once you've got a good idea, then you can figure out if it is drillable for the drain hole.  Then you can search the net for how marble workers, counter top installers or glass workers drill holes through the material.
