I think they confirmed it on Mythbusters.  You actually can if you know what you're doing and avoid rough surfaces.  

I wouldn't try it, though.

Um, no. They don't create enough suction to support an average person's body weight. I wouldn't recommend climbing a skyscraper, it tends to get you arrested........
