I also have a National City debit ATM card with Visa on it. Will most German merchants take these as payment? All answers are appreciated!

  1. Generally speaking you can use your debit card at any ATM affiliated with the same network-IE if your card is a visa card  any ATM machine with a visa logo will allow you to withdraw funds BUT the specific ATM must have that visa logo and not all of them will.  Be wary of fees-in addition to your basic atm usage fees banks will also assess a currency exchange fee-usually a percentage of the transaction. You should also call your bank and tell them you are traveling-otherwise they may shut down your card on the theory that no one in Dusseldorf has any business accessing an account opened in Oklahoma. I have not been to Germany in ages but when I was last in Europe I couldn't get  merchants/restaurants to get my card to run, however I had no troubles with the ATM's. I don't know about the wal-mart pre paid cards because pre paid cards have different rules, but national city does claim to be accepted worldwide. I would call first though to be sure. You might consider investing in travelers check as a backup-just in case.

    enjoy your trip.

  2. You really have to read the fine print on the back of the Visa card for terms and see if there is a web site to look at, then see what the international rules are under FAQ, or try for live communication.  Most Visa debit or Credit cards are accepted anywhere you see the Visa logo, and if you buy it here, you are probably going to pay a fee for currency exchange.  You really have to do research here.  Hope this helps... :-)

  3. the most accepted credit cards in Germany are:

    VISA, MasterCard, American Express and

    JCB und Diners Club.

if Visa is on your ATM card or Walmart money you can use it!

  4. Almost all ATMs in Germany accept Visa (and Mastercard), the majority of restaurants, too, however not all merchants do. Especially in supermarkets you'll have trouble using credit cards, and any card definitly won't be accepted below a specific amount, usually around 10 to 20 €. Same goes for smaller stores. Large chains on the other hand generally do accept credit cards.

The reason for this is that a debit card called „ec card“ comes with every German bank account. „ec“ used to be short for Eurocheque, however, since Eurocheques (and cheques generally) don't exist anymore in Germany since some 15 years, the ec now stands for „electronic cash“.

You can think of it as a national standard debit card issued by the banks, without any company like Visa inbetween. Any payment gets charged the same day right from the bank account the card was issued for.

Using the ec system is less expensive (and less paperwork, too) for the merchants, that's why many usually stay with the ec card and don't accept credit cards.

Anyway, since there are many ATMs around, both at banks as well as post offices, getting cash with your card should not be a problem.

Just make sure you may use your debit card outside the US. Contact Walmart/GE Money and National City about this.

  5. Visa DEBIT cards are mostly useless in Europe. German merchants accept debit cards from the EC debit card system, cash and visa CREDIT cards.

If you want to come to Germany I strongly suggest getting either a visa credit card or an account with Citibank. Most German cities have a Citibank branch, from the ATM there you can withdraw money with your US Citibank ATM card without any fees. With the Euros in hand you can then pay cash.

Ignore the previous answers (apart from "some Bozo"), until I see evidence to the contrary I don't think they know the difference between a visa debit card and a visa credit card.
