Question:

Can you use a Sprint Wireless Card as a Modem?

I have a laptop with a Sprint Wireless Card. Can I hook it to a wireless router and have wireless service inside the house for several computers. I hooked up an ethernet cord from the Computer to the Router, but there must be some settings that have to be adjusted. Though my computers will recognize the router, it does not hook them up to the internet. Any ideas?

  1. Hi,

You need to enable internet conection sharing.  I'm gonna give indtructions for windows xp.  Vista is similer but might be a little bit different.  There are 2 ways of doing this.

Click start>conect to>show all conections.  You should have 2 or 3 "lan or high speed" conections.  Select the ethernet port (probaly labled local area connection) and your Sprint wireless card.  (lassow them or select one, hold down control and select the other so both are selected)

Now, clcik advanced at the top and click bridge conections.  This is the easier of the 2 ways, and it makes file sharign easier, but sometimes routers dotn like it.

The other way is to richt click on your sprint connection and hit properties.  Clcik on the advanced tab.  About a 3rd of the way down you see a check box next to Allow other network users to connect through this computers internet connection.  Check that box.  If you have 3 connection itmight ask you which connection you want to share with in a dropdown menu.  In this case select to share it with your local area network ethernet card.

Now that you got your computer browdcasing its internet through your ethernet jack, plug an ethernet cable into port 1 and your laptop.  (you can plug into the internet port on the router if you dont want to share files accross the network)  Now every routher is different, but you must access the router configeration page.  For linksys routers type http://192.168.1.1 into a browser.  user and pass are admin if you didnt chage it.  You need to make sure the router is set to obtain an ip address automaticaly.  I dont know your exact configeration, but this hsoudl be a drop down menu ont he main router page.  If you have problems you may also have to disable dhcp (probaly wont) but some computer try to override the routers dhcp server.  You might have to play around with some settings on the router, but the computer instructions I gave you are correct and muct be done before your router can get internet.  Keep in mind, by doing ths it might out up to a 20% proccesor load on your laptop and your laptop must remain on for internet on the other computers.  You probaly want to disable auto stndby and hibernation and such.

    Hope this helps,

    Cody
