Question:

Can you use a hunter under saddle saddle in hunter jumpers?

I have been doing this project for my riding instructor. It's comparing and contrasting different styles of riding. I've had some luck so far but I have come to a cross-road. I know that you can use a hunter jumper saddle and a jumper saddle in hunter jumpers, but can you use a hunter under saddle saddle for hunter jumpers? If you can get back to me before tomorrow that would be great!

  1. Well, it's been a few years since I've shown hunters either 'over fences' or 'under saddle', but I can't imagine that it's changed that much(?)  We use to use a 'forward seat' (i.e.jumping) saddle for any classes over fences(hunters or jumpers), and a 'forward seat' or 'all purpose' (probably what you're calling a hunter under saddle, saddle) for anything on the flat.  If you're just showing on the flat - Hunter Under Saddle - an all purpose should work fine and allow you to keep your leg under you a bit more, but remember you're still trying to create an overall impression of 'hunter' style.  Does that answer your question?

  2. Yes you can

    Most do

Not to many pros use any thing but a close contact saddle for Jumpers and hunters

Now if you use a a really built up saddle in hunters thats made only for jumpers and or 3 day Yes some Judges will consider that as your not really ready for a close contact

At big shows it does matter

    Small shows who cares!

  3. I use the same saddle for all of my classes... I jump, then have a couple of flats... one hunters, one eq.  Mine is a close contact saddle.  It's not specifically a jumper saddle... jumpers saddles tend to have a very forward flap... mine only has a very small slant.

All purpose saddles and close contact saddles are very similar.  As their name suggests, they can be used for all purposes.  I know people who really don't like to use all purpose saddles for jumping... they don't give you the best leg position.  But they can be used for everything and some people do use them for everything.

I hope that's what you meant... I've never heard of having a specific saddle for HUS.

  4. Yes of course you can ,

    Most are the same

    They are all close contact

Now some pros want their own type

    But Yes

    Who wants to know !

Many trainers have even ridden in Gallop saddles !

Hunters are not much different from Jumpers

Now there are many different types But most want to be as close to the horse as possiable ,
