Can you use a knee board as a surfboard?

can you surf on a knee board? i have an obrien knee board that is about 4 feet long and i am 5 foot 5. the board is is semispoon shape and compression molded. i was wondering if i could use it as a surf board in the ocean. i have used it body boarding and it worked good for that. i want to learn to surf butt dont have 300$ for a new board and dont want to pay the shipping on one from ebay. i dont live near the coast so i cant buy one used eaither. so is it posible to surf on a knee board with a nuf balance?

I wouldn't spend too much time trying to learn on that, it is simply too short. In fact I would start with a longboard. You can start with a shortboard but I see many people get frustrated and just quit before they could get through the learning curve. At least with a longboard you have the best chance at catching waves early on so you don't get to frustrated. Young people usually advance quickly and scale down to smaller boards. As far as the 4ft kneeboard goes I think you will just get frustrated. Just kneeboard the thing like it was intended and try to get a decent used surfboard.
