Can you use a sofa or a bench inside a van as a seat for people or children to sit on?

My friend John has a 1990 Volkswagon van that he uses to transport his three children, all under 10, around in. The van used to have a middle bench seat, but it's a pain to have to pull out/put in as it requires tools, and doesn't have a quick release. John also has a girlfreind who has a young grand child (less than 2) who requires a car seat.

The bench is pretty heavy, and he puts it in the van sideways (against the exterior wall of the van for support) and then buckles his son in using the driver's seat belt. Will that be sufficient to have in case of an accident?

He also has a small sofa (part of an old sectional) that he wants to try and use also, he tried it this weekend as it is closer to the ground and tips less. Is this a safer alternative to the bench?

Any advice?

I think John just figures it's easier to deal with the transportation this way, and he's a really good driver, they only do this a few times a week...

NO WAY!!!!!!!

That is not safe at all.  The vehicle seat must be bolted to the frame of the car and all carseats and boosters require them to be installed on a forward facing vehicle seat.

SERIOUSLY? That is totally illegal! The seats have to be attached to the floor. If he was in an accident, those kids would be hurt bad. it doesn't matter how good of a driver this guy is. NO ONE sets out to have an accident. A little common sense is called for here.

I hope someone sees this and knows who he is and he gets pulled over and arrested for endangering these kids.

It's illegal in all states... the seat must be anchored securely to the vehicle and have it's own safety belts

Your friend is a stark-raving idiot!! And, furthermore, he doesn't deserve to have children.  "He's a good driver:" You're a stupid **** for even thinking c**p like that!  Anything can happen. Where are you people from? Were you raised by mushrooms in a trailer park? For God sakes man! You need a properly designed original manufactured seat with the original seat belts anchored. Why do you need to take the bench out anyway? How convenient will it be for your friend if he has to bury his child because it was crushed inside the car. Why do people like you even breathe air?
