Can you use a thermostat designed for a heat pump on a conventional ac/gas heat system?

I have a Trane residential programmable thermostat

Heat/Cool (3 Heat/ 2 Cool), Auto changeover

  1. Most heat pump systems have a two heating modes--one is running the actual heat pump (compressor) and the other is electric resistance heat for when it is really cold outside.  So the thermostat probably requires an input for the outside temp, whereas a normal gas system wouldn't need this.  But that doesn't mean you can't use--you just have to modify the wiring some.


  2. If you mean a plug in heater/ in an AC outlet - to a gas boiler type heating system with ac . NO it not compatible.

  3. depends on type of tstat you have,i would have to say yes it can be done.i been in this type of work for 15 years,heat pumps can be alittle tricky.if i knew what kind of tstat u have i could help more
