Can you use a tone generator for talk battery?

Can you use a tone generator (I have a tempo 77) for talk battery on an in-house, phone to phone connection? If its possible, how would you connect the tone to the line.

If it has a switch position for batt., you can. If not, place a 9v batt. across any jack, (parallel) and you can talk phone to phone.
