  1. Yes, and no.

    Those that have become words in their own right, such as SNAFU (situation normal, all fouled up} and SCUBA (self-contained underwater breathing apparatus) are allowed.  Those that have not, like ASAP (As soon as possible) or HUD (Housing and Urban Development) are not permitted.

    All acronyms are abbreviations (they can be pronounced as words) but not all abbreviations are acronyms.  Another category are words that were words first and then someone made an acronym from its letters, like KISS ( keep it simple, stupid.)

    A great way to check if a word is allowed is to download a program called ZYZZYVA.  It is free, and it has a word judge program based on the word list used in National Scrabble Association-sanctioned tournaments, which contains more words than the Official Scrabble Players Dictionary,  All the words in the Dictionary are there, but it also contains words considered "offensive" so you might not want to use it if children are playing.
