I am doing my BA in anthropology, however I don't think you can get into the field on an undergraduate degree. I want to do graduate work but in a field that would lead more to aid/NGO work, I am looking into development studies or politics/international relations. Are these good field to get into NGO work, I want to be out making a difference in the real world, not sitting in a classroom somewhere debating the finer points of anthro theory.

  1. What you might do is go to sites that have job listings

http://www.myidealist.org is one that would have relevant postings, and read what qualifications they're looking for for the kinds of jobs you want.

Also, it's got ways to network, you could ask peoople who are doing what you want to do, what studies would be best.

Anthropology sounds reasonable, but so do the other things you've listed.

  2. I don't feel that that the subject of your degree matters nor does the fact that it is an undergraduate one. I have worked in and with a number of NGOs around the world and people from all walks of live with a range of degrees work in them. All that is needed is an interest and a commitment. Check out the requirements that NGOs ask for in their job announcements on their website. Problem is that many ask for experience which leads to a chicken and egg situation.

  3. Absolutely.  I think you're very well situated.

    Good luck!
