Can you use any mattress for a bunk bed?

I'm getting a bunk bed with a futon on the bottom and i was wondering if you can use any mattress for the top?

you need to get the appropriate size and weight , a bunk bed is not is sturdy as a floor one at least the top of it ,you don't want to crush whomever is sleeping on the one below.
