We recently moved into an older home and it has fuses, our question is this: It is powered by a 100 amp fuse box, we need to replace some of the fuses. does it matter what types of fuses we use as long as the AMPS are correct...??

Ie: Type TL, SL, S etc...?? Thanks for your help!

  1. Amperage is the important part.  If you use a lesser amperage, you will constantly blow fuses.  If you use a greater amperage you risk damaging your electronics.  The "Types" refer the the time delay factor.  Time Delay fuses are recommended for appliances that have a significant surge when they start ie) Air Conditioners, Fridges, Freezers etc.

  2. The letters that you reference are the 'time characteristics' of the fuse.

As long as the amperage is correct for the circuit that it protects,

    you may use them iinterchangeably

Type SL will require an adapter, and is a standard time delay fuse for general circuits, which might see surges from motors or large appliances..

Type TL is for the same service, no adapter.

You might want to use Type T where there are larger loads like kitchen or shop circuits.

Type P offers quicker protection for bedrooms etc. where you don't

    expect surges.

It IS important that you use the proper Amp. rated fuse for each circuit.

    #14 wire - 15A. Max.

    #12 wire - 20A. Max.

    # 10 wire - 30 A. Max.

  3. If they are the same amps and fit the slot/ hole whatever. Yes.

  4. Yes you can as long as they fit the fuse receptacle.

On fuse/stats they come in different amps and different colors. the higher amps won't properly s***w into the lower rated (different color) holes. but if the amps match and the fit..it will be fine.
