Common rail is not a problem for biodiesel.  You have to make sure all the components of the fuel system are resistant to biodiesel, some are and some are not.  Remember biodiesel is not straight vegetable oil but processed to have the correct fuel characteristics of diesel.  Although diesel fuel is rated in terms of cetane number (min 50 required in Europe) you can find that biodiesel contains more straight chain hydrocarbons and fewer aromatic rings so burns better as a diesel fuel with lower emissions and higher power.  Generally the higher the H:C ratio the higher power and lower emissions.  Hydrogen of course has the ratio of infinity in that respect hence its attractiveness as a fuel, but not in a diesel engine.

The key problem with Biodiesel is that the fuel takes on the properties of the oil it was made from. So if you use palm oil (a solid at room temperature) then you end with with solid fuel.

One of the problems with Biodiesel in the UK and USA is that production is unregulated, so there are a lot of misconceptions out there. The fact is you'll need to change your fuel filter after 1000 miles, and you'll need to add carbon diesel in colder weather.
