Can you use milk as a substitue for eyedrops?

I play waterpolo, and there was a point where our pool had alot of chlorine and made some of the girls eyes hurt alot. A couple of girls said that they could use milk because it soothes the pain and the eye itself. Now my eyes hurt, and I dont have any eyedrops..so I was thinking about the milk thing, but it sounds kinda weird. Can I do that? Has anyone else heard of this? Can it be harmful?

  1. Are you crazy

  2. Don't do this, it's generally not a good idea. If you don't have eye drops, take a shower, or find some other water, but don't introduce milk/fruit juice/soda into your eyes. It could be potentially harmful. And I hope you win your next game! :)

  3. dont do this, you stoner.

  4. i wouldnt, but when you eat something spicy and ur tongue hurts milk soothes it so maybe it'll do the same thing for your eyes... hm...

  5. No- the best thing you can do for eye pain from the pool is to rinse out your eyes after getting out of the pool. For about five dollars, you can buy a large container of baush and lomb's eye wash- really, any brand eye wash you'll find at a pharmacy or grocery store with a drug section will work. Unlike eye drops, which just dilute the chemicals that are irritating you, specially formulated eye wash will both remove the chemicals and soothe your eyes.

In the mean time, take a shower. Don't aim the shower directly at your eyelids- a minor change in temperature might burn them. Instead, just rinse your hands out in the shower, and then close your eyes and use your hands to scoop water onto your eyelids- that, with the steam of the shower, works alright.

  6. I know that I wouldnt

  7. I'm a swimmer and I've never heard of this before.

This sounds gross and not good, but I DO remember once watching a video about police and how in some states in order to be allowed to carry pepper spray, they have to know what it feels like, so they are sprayed in the eyes.  Lots of little milk containers are on hand because they're the only thing that takes the burn away, if I remember correctly. I know some of the cops were throwing the milk in their eyes, so it must not be terrible. LOL
