I was just wondering if you guys know if it's okay to use open front jump boots on hind legs. I know I should use ankle boots, but I want to offer more protection.

I also know that some companies such as Eskadron do make boots like this for the hind legs, but I want to know about this type of boot:http://cgi.ebay.com/Pelham-Ascot-Traditional-Leather-Open-Front-Jump-Boots_W0QQitemZ160249516678QQihZ006QQcategoryZ16236QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

I'm not sure if this is a front only boot, but if it is, and I used it on the hinds, will it hurt my horse's legs?

  1. No. Please dont use front boots on your horses back legs. There are other types of hind boots besides ankle boots. Front boots are made for front legs only and wont fit the back legs.

Example- these are made for hind legs:

And these can be used for front & hind, but you need to order seperate sizes:

  2. These look like front boots. But I know you can get similar ones for the back legs, I would look for an advert that included the word hind boots. because front boots would be too small and the straps would not be long enough on the back legs.  They are many kinds of boots for the back legs. Ones that offer even more protection than the ones in the picture.  http://www.saddlery.biz/scp/Horse_Boots_...

I included this page to give you some ideas of boots you can use. But maybe you know this already.

I hope this helps. Good luck :)

  3. i use either SMBs all around or i do open front boots in the front and polo wraps on the hind. I don't think it will hurt your horses legs but i would just by some cheap polos to school in. I found rear boots move around. If you show you won't use them any way. I would go with polos and learn how to wrap properly so you don't hurt your horses legs. They are cheap and easy to wash. Plus they offer support. The only negitive about polo wraps is your horse won't feel the poles if he knocks them down. The purpose of the open front boots is to offer him protection (not support) but still allow him to feel the rails if he hits them and pick his feet up higher next time.

  4. no dont there will be other types of boots for that

  5. I don't think those boots would be the best for your horse's back legs, it will probally be uncomfortable and it might cause him to hurt himself.

  6. This pair of boots on the web site are open fronts. You do not want to use open fronts on the hinds as the size and make of the hind leg is different then the front. If you are looking for a good boot for the hind either the ankle boots as you said in your question or you could use plan old splint boot or woof boot.

The boot that you linked us to is just the same idea as the eskadrons just made by a different manufacture.
