As I recall they aint the best kindling and dont burn all that fantastic.  Better is Pine stump

They are used in the oil drilling industry I believe, pumped into the bore hole to stabalize soil but I could be el wrongo

I would buy some fat sticks!  They are loaded with sap and burn like a disco inferno!!  Pecan hulls are only for folks that buy tofu and shop at Wild Oats.  They make them into haydite blocks.

Some of the best steaks I have had were cooked with pecan wood.  Yummy.

Pecan shells are also used to absorb oil spills.

Interesting that you ask this question. Have you watched man in the wild or survivor...maybe not? Actually Pecan shell are hard and thin. They would be a BAD choice to start a fire. But, if you had nothing else to burn, they would be ok to continue a fire. They would be like the pellet stoves that sell on the market. The problem with them is that they are too hard to get the temperature up enough to combust the shell. Your ignition source is the critical issue: e.g. flint, match, propane lighter, blow torch, gasoline, diesel fuel. To start a fire you have to get the combustible up to combustion temperature. For example, charcoal briquettes would not ignite with a lighter. Well neither would pecan shells. Charcoal briquettes on the other hand once lit will continue burn at a slow rate for a long time while pecan shells would burn intensely for a very short time. You would have to add them to the fire constantly. The final note would be that from a commercial point of view if you had 500 tons of pecan shell, then one of the commercial uses of them could be to compress them into a brick and sell them for home fire place use.
