Question:

Can you use polo wraps over your horse's leg quilts when you're trailering or should you use something else?

I am shopping for trailering/shipping wraps and I am wondering if you are able to use normal polo wraps as the wraps over the leg quilts or if there is something else I should use instead. This is the cart I had put together... take a look and tell me what you think (the leather halter is the "show halter" the owner of the barn I board at keeps insisting I have)...

  1. you should use standing wraps and no-bow pads....also you have to know how to correctly wrap, the right amount of pressure, consistency and placement of your wraps. If you are not qualified to wrap use shipping boots or nothing at all, sometimes wrapping and boots cause more problems and i have seen awful accident because a horse freaked out cause a wrap came loose or a boot came off. If you do wrap use vet wrap to secure the Velcro so they dont come off and make sure your pads cover the coronet band of the legs.

heres a link to standing wraps and no-bow pads.

  2. If I were you I wouldn't use a polo wrap. They are usually to thin to give any protection I use shipping boots which are much safer and not expensive. They are more expensive then polo wraps but the boots are safer!!!!

  3. I personaly dont like shiping boots they slip a lot and just dont seem to work that well for me

I use leg quilts and polo wraps on my horses when shiping and it works great you can get them tight enough so they dont slip down the horses leg (shiping boots are usually too large for the horses and just slip around because you cant get them tight enough) but be sure not to make the wraps too tight this could hurt the tundons in your horses legs

The halter is not a show halter it is just a leather haler with a name plate show halters can be very expensive though

here are some nice shows halters and some less expensive ones

  4. you should use standing wraps. They are made of a different material and are longer. If you only have polos i would just polo the horse and not use the quilted bandages because the polos are too short.(tryed it)

If you get a leather halter get the break away. They break easily and then instead of replacing the whole halter you will just replace the top part. I don't think you need a leather halter but if you do just get a cheap one off of www.horseloverz.com they are cheap and are not the best quality but will do the job. You can get better quality ones on there. Whatever you buy oil it before you use it. I forgot to and my horse broke it right away.

Good luck showing and finding standing wraps/bandages.

Edit: do not buy shipping boots they suck and are expensive. They slip all over the place. just get the quilts and wraps. You can use them for so many other things too.

  5. I really prefer to use standard or track bandages over the quilts.  I feel that the polos are too thick and hot, and slip easier than the track bandages when used for shipping.

  6. yea polos over quilts work great    the other wraps you saw were probably standing wraps the do the same thing as polos

  7. I would tend to agree with the 1st poster and go for shipping boots.  The reason being that they protect the most vulnerable part of the horses foot during shipping which is the coronet band..plus the fleece lining and being made of waterproof material.

If you must use quilts and wraps, make sure that the quilts are long enough to cover the coronet band and up the leg to the knee...Most shipping boots have that extra flap by the knee so the knee can bend but is still protected from bumping.

You should also get a head bumper and the fleece that covers the nose band, sides and headpiece of the halter (then you wouldn't need the bumper).  These will act as a buffer should the horse hit his head against something while traveling.  I also put on a light sheet too.  Oh..we only use leather halters..for safety purposes.

Your cart did not come up but I am attaching the link for the shipping boots...you get for all fours for $38.00...foolproof and inexpensive.
