Can you use prepaid gift credit cards online?

I tried to use it to buy some granola bars online and the retailer said my name and address doesn't match the credit card. I tried to explained that it is a prepaid card and I was hung up on.

  1. It completely depends on the retailer and their card processing company.  It is a common problem as a majority of online stores require that the billing address you enter matches the billing address of the card you use, for security purposes.

    Many times, it is not the retailer, but their processor or bank that sets the security requirements. Unfortunately there's not much you can do, and it will vary from retailer to retailer.  

    Sometimes, if the card has a phone number on the back, you can call and get the "billing address" that would match, and therefore work when using online.  

    It can be a real headache....if at all possible, try to use your card at a physical store, or find a "gift card friendly" online store. They usually state somewhere that they accept gift cards.  

    Another option is to trade or swap the card for cash with a friend or relative.
